"If you don't want us to lose this movement, we can't lose each other in this..."
My heart hurts...It aches with an unwavering, unspeakable, and almost unbearable pain. In these times of uproar and uncertainty, Mayor Bottoms's quote cuts deep. It's a plea from (I'd imagine) a sincere leader with her back against the wall.
I speak for myself as a proud Black and African American woman when I say: I WANT SO MUCH MORE FOR MY PEOPLE! I only want them to want it for themselves. I want them to know the seriousness in making others take us seriously, by first taking ourselves seriously.
It is as if we're driving reckless in the present, with our focus on the past, with no regard for what lies ahead--- our personal consequences and the lives of our children.
WHAT IS A MOVEMENT, if there is no uniformity? No consistency? No cohesiveness? No love for self? No accountability?
You are absolutely right, Mayor Bottoms. "Enough is enough!"
