On this day, we pay homage to Lawrence Douglas Wilder, the first African American in the United States to be elected #governor of a state in 1990.

His election represented a notable shift in how the state of Virginia and, perhaps, the country viewed African Americans-- a group who are often discouraged from voting and whose #political insight is discarded. (On the same day, Virginia witnessed the first woman to win election to statewide office. Mary Sue Terry was sworn in on the same day as Virginia's attorney general.)
"A veteran of the Korean War, he was a lawyer by profession, and he was the first black member of the #Senate of #Virginia in the twentieth century" (lva.virginia.gov), Wilder represents well what honorable and dedicated looks like.
